More than 1,250 trucks are waiting to enter Russia at the Latvian-Russian border, Radio Liberty reports with reference to the BNS agency, which, in turn, refers to data from the Latvian State Revenue Service.

On the morning of July 17, about 850 trucks accumulated at the Terekhovo border crossing on the Latvian-Russian border. At the Grebnevo border crossing - about 400 more. The waiting time at these border points is six days.

According to Irina Golubeva, Deputy Head of the Latvian Customs Post, the traffic jam at the borders is caused by the interruption of communication with the Russian customs services.. The exchange of information between customs, according to Golubeva, has been complicated since the beginning of Russia's war in Ukraine.. Transportation is also complicated by the need to check each truck for the presence of goods subject to EU economic sanctions.. “We really hoped that with the end of the transition period on July 10, in which certain categories of goods could still be exported, the queues would be significantly reduced, but our expectations were not justified,” Golubeva said..

A large accumulation of trucks is also observed on the border of Latvia with Belarus. According to the Latvian customs service, 150 cargo vehicles gathered at the border checkpoint in Paternieki, 200 in Silene.

Recall that since June 18, Lithuania has partially blocked Russia's access to the Kaliningrad region, which does not have a land border with the Russian Federation, by banning rail transit of certain products in connection with the sanctions imposed by the European Union.
