In Russia, representatives of working professions devote little time to raising children - these concerns lie almost entirely on mothers, the research of the Higher School of Economics, which deals with the modern understanding of paternity in different social strata. In the course of the study, in-depth interviews were conducted with workers and their wives in Moscow and the small towns of the Vladimir and Vologda regions (interviews with fathers, mothers and married couples), whose average age was 30 years. Following the interviews, three models of paternity were identified: absent / infantilized father; situational father / good earner; the father involved. The first two models are more common, says the author of the study, Alexander Lipasov: in the overwhelming majority of the families surveyed, it is believed that the man is primarily the breadwinner and the defender, and the education of the children and the house should be handled by a woman, so men have little contact with children, do not give them emotional warmth and little participation in their daily lives. "In the traditional gender ideology in which these families exist, paternity is optional, and motherhood is compulsory," the study notes.. It is pointed out that in such families archaic methods of upbringing are practiced - men can frustrate stress and aggression on children and wife. Also, most respondents did not support the idea of ??career self-realization of women. It is believed that "for a woman - after all, comfort and education of children", but in fact many women have to work in a "double shift" to provide a family.

Such a situation can be explained by the preservation of the community life in small towns: the density of social ties and "collective" thinking, the study explains - many residents are descendants of members of the peasant community, therefore the distribution of family responsibilities is reminiscent of the "traditional gender contract" of rural Soviet Russia.
