People who have received good marks at school and after school have been engaged in mental work, in old age have a much lower risk of dementia compared to their less educated peers.

This is evidenced by the results of a study conducted in Sweden.

"Children's school assessments, which we used in our research as a marker of intellectual abilities in early life, help determine the individual risk of dementia 50 years after school. This is really a wonderful result. We also found that intellectual work after school contributes to risk reduction even many years after retirement, "says lead author of the study, Dr. Serhiy Dekhtyar, from the Department of Clinical Neurosciences of the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm.

Scientists observed 7 574 people aged 65 years and over, who for two decades were part of the Uppsala Birth Cohort Study cohort. In the hands of researchers was detailed information about their school assessments at the age of 10, as well as the level of education and occupation.

The results of the study were presented by Swedish scientists at the International Conference of the Alzheimer's Association (AAIC) 2015, which takes place from 18 to 23 July in Washington. Later, these data will be published in scientific journals.

During the study period, 950 participants developed signs of dementia. The analysis showed that in people with poor school grades, the risk of dementia is 21% higher than that of former high achievers (odds ratios 0.79, P <0.05). People who have been engaged in mental work in middle age have a 23% lower risk of dementia compared with those who work mostly with their hands (OR 0.77, P <0.05).

The lowest risk of dementia was found in those participants who were excellent pupils at school and worked all their lives with a lot of information (engineers, doctors, teachers, programmers). In this group, the risk of dementia was as much as 39% lower (OR 0.61, P <0.001). But still the main factor scientists call mental abilities, which the child demonstrates in childhood.

"The high intellectual abilities of a person in childhood are best protected from the development of dementia in old age, even taking into account the level of education and the characteristics of labor. Apparently, good education and mental work can not compensate for the lack of outstanding abilities in childhood, "said Dr. Degtyar during a press conference.
