The vitamin D content in the female body may decrease soon after the end of taking hormonal contraceptives and other preparations containing estrogen.

Therefore, women who refuse estrogen should think about adjusting the diet or vitamin supplements.

Let us recall that vitamin D plays an important role in the assimilation of calcium and the maintenance of the functions of the immune system.

The main share of this vitamin is produced by man himself, under the influence of ultraviolet rays. During pregnancy, the female body requires more vitamin D, needed for the fetal bone system.

"The results of our research show that any woman can experience a sudden vitamin D deficiency at the very moment when she refuses from contraception and decides to become pregnant. But it is at this point that a lack of vitamin can have the most unfortunate consequences, "explains Dr. Quaker Harmon, a researcher at the US National Institute of Ecology and Health.

In the news release of the Endocrinology Society, Dr. Harmon warns that if hormonal contraceptives are abandoned for the purpose of subsequent conception, women need to provide their body with an adequate amount of vitamin D. It can be both vitamin supplements, and a special diet.

In the study, Dr. Harmon, 1,700 black women from the city of Detroit and its environs. Scientists compared the results of blood tests for vitamin D with questionnaires, where women reported receiving hormonal drugs and other medications.

"Taking into account differences in diet and lifestyle of participants, we found: after stopping the intake of estrogenic drugs, the level of vitamin D in the blood is set below the average. Probably, the intake of hormones contributes to the increase in the vitamin D content, which is why there are problems after the abrupt withdrawal of drugs, "the researcher reasoned..

Unfortunately, in the modern menu of the Western man there are very few products that contain a sufficient amount of vitamin D. To prevent its deficiency should regularly be in the sun, take special enriched foods, fish oil (salmon, tuna) or vitamin supplements.

For adults, vitamin preparations containing 800-1000 IU of vitamin D per dose. Most multivitamin complexes contain 400 IU, which, according to American doctors, is clearly insufficient.

With the findings of Dr. Harmon, you can see in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
