Sweet creatures can sleep peacefully. Scientists have received new data that the use of sugar (as well as in general carbohydrates) does not lead to the growth of fat mass in the body. Details of the study that showed this are published in the journal Cell Metabolism.

Large-scale work on the study of what exactly nutrients - proteins, fats or carbohydrates - lead to a rapid weight gain, carried out by scientists from the University of Aberdeen and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. They analyzed the results of experiments related to 30 diets on which mice were kept.

These diets contained different levels of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. The animals were fed in accordance with them for three months - this is equivalent to nine years in humans. As a result, having carried out more than 100 thousand measurements of body weight, the researchers stated: the only factor that provokes the growth of fat mass and, accordingly, the fullness, is the active use of fat.

The biggest surprise of the project was the evidence that the use of sugar did not lead to weight gain.

"Carbohydrates, up to 30% of which are sugar, did not affect anything. The only thing that caused mice to get fat is the increasing amount of fat in the diet. Combining fat and sugar gave the effect of both a single fat, "- noted experts.

According to scientists, fat stimulates reward centers in the brain, which leads to an increasing demand for high-calorie foods. At the same time, it is important to take into account the fact that the object of this study was still animals, not humans, although in terms of physiology and metabolism, the body of mice and humans really has a lot in common.
