13 pictures of which the movie was made were photographed by the Hubble telescope in 22 minutes. Scientists photographed Mars to study its surface, so the appearance on the pictures of a very small and poorly discernible Phobos was for them a pleasant surprise.

The orbit of Phobos is located at a distance of 9400 kilometers from the center of Mars, which is 40 times smaller than the distance from Earth to the Moon. The satellite makes one full orbit in 7 hours 39 minutes.
