American director Jonathan Demme died

In the USA, at the 74th year of his life, director Jonathan Demme, who was known primarily as the director of the film "The Silence of the Lambs", released in 1991.

About the death of Demme told the magazine Variety. Later, the director's agent confirmed his death. According to him, Demme died of complications of esophageal cancer in his apartment in Manhattan. Funeral Demme will be held in the family circle, said his agent.

Demme's film "The Silence of the Lambs" remained his most famous work. It was one of the few films in the history of Hollywood that won the Oscar in five nominations - "Best Film", "Best Director's Work", the best works of the actor and actress in the lead roles and the best adaptation of the book.

Among other famous works of Demme - the film "Philadelphia".

He was one of the first films devoted to the problem of AIDS in Hollywood. Also the director made films "Married for the Mafia", "Wild Thing", "Manchurian Candidate".

In addition, Demme worked as a director on the famous American television show - "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Saturday Night Live", which marked the beginning of whole genres of television programs.
