University of Adelaide Researchers Find New Evidence for a Positive Role of Androgens in Breast Cancer Treatment, with Immediate Effects for Women with Estrogen-Positive Metastatic Disease.

An international study published in the journal Nature Medicine looked at the role of androgens, commonly thought to be male sex hormones but also found at lower concentrations in women, as a potential treatment for estrogen-positive breast cancer.

Using cell line models and derived from patients, the team has demonstrated that activation of the androgen receptor by a natural androgen or a novel androgenic drug has potent anticancer activity in all estrogen-positive cancers, even in resistant to current treatment options.. At the same time, androgen receptor inhibitors did not work.
