A drug that can slow down the main processes of aging at the level of mitochondria, scientists from the United Kingdom.

As the results of studies carried out at the University of Exeter, if using compounds discovered by biologists, the basic mechanisms of aging can be suspended.

MedicalXpress writes that the first laboratory tests of drugs AP39, AP123 and RT01 were performed on endothelial cells inside the blood vessels. As a result, the number of "old" cells that are no longer able to divide, and therefore, to rejuvenate, decreased by 50%.

Professor Lorna Harris, from the University's medical school, said that the aim of the study was to help people stay healthy as long as possible.

"This refers to the level of health and quality of life, and not simply to increase life expectancy," she said..

The compounds AP39, AP123 and RT01 delivered hydrogen sulphide to the mitochondria, thus helping old and damaged cells generate the necessary energy for longer functioning and slowing down the aging process.

The proven effect on mitochondria will reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, scientists believe.
