Immediately two medical studies sowed grains of doubt in the prevailing ideas about hormone replacement therapy in the period of menopause. Scientists claim that the appointment of hormone therapy during menopause does not have a positive effect, and possibly harm the health of women.

The first study, led by JoAnn Manson, claims that hormone treatment given to women during menopause does not in any way protect women from the risk of cardiovascular disease, as previously thought. In this case, in some cases, it is possible that estrogen and progesterone therapy in itself increases their risk. Thus, the risk of myocardial infarction increases by 81% during the first year of hormonal therapy, and the likelihood of breast cancer and stroke increases significantly in the first five years of hormone therapy.

The second study, led by Howard Hodis, found that the use of estrogen replacement progesterone therapy had no effect on the development of atherosclerosis of the blood vessels.

Scientists claim that women who take such treatment should stop it, and those who only reach the menopause period, do not start.

The results of the studies, involving more than 17,000 women, were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
