Scientists have discovered a gene in the center of the reward of the brain, which can cause depression. This discovery provides an opportunity to develop new treatments for a common mental disorder.

Scientists from the University of Maryland found that a gene called Slc6a15 at the center of brain stimulation could be the cause of depression. Moreover, it can either increase anxiety or protect someone from stress. It is enough to change the expression of Slc6a15 in the brain.

Researches of scientists were based on the results of previous studies, which showed the connection between this gene and depression in the brain, controlling emotions and memory. It is this zone is the main one in the study of depression.

"This study shows that we really need to study how all areas of the brain contribute to depression. We can not treat the brain as a single organ. Because it is very heterogeneous, we need to monitor vulnerable neurons and find ways to treat them. I hope this study will help us come up with pharmacological agents that can change the levels of this gene to treat people with depression, "said study author Dr. Mary Kay Lobo.
