The use of five cups of coffee a day can completely change the memory performance of patients with Alzheimer's disease, according to American scientists.

Researchers from Florida conducted an experiment in mice, the results of which showed that caffeine can prevent the occurrence of protein plaques that cause memory problems in people with dementia. The results of the previous study also showed the protective effect of caffeine on memory.

However, British experts said that while the results are preliminary, so this does not mean that people suffering from Alzheimer's disease should be prescribed coffee for medicinal purposes. The study was published in the Journal of Alzheimers disease.

In the experiment were involved 55 mice, who were bred specifically for the occurrence of Alzheimer's disease. Having first ascertained that the memory worsened in animals, the experts divided the mice into two groups at the age of 18-19 months - the age equivalent to 70 years in man.

One group of rodents received 227 grams of caffeine per day, which is equivalent to 5 cups of coffee, the other - pure water.

Two months later, all the mice were tested, and it turned out that those who received caffeine had significantly better memory performance than the control animals.

An earlier study by the same group of scientists showed that coffee also had a prophylactic effect in terms of dementia in mice predisposed to the disease. Experts believe that this effect can extend to the human body, but for accurate conclusions it is necessary to conduct additional studies involving people, the Air Force reports..
