According to British researchers, the risk of diseases of the cardiovascular system in women sleeping less than eight hours, higher than men who live in the same rhythm.

Scientists conducted a study in which they found out that the level of markers of inflammatory processes varies greatly among women with different sleep times, and much less in men. The results of the study were published in the July issue of the magazine Sleep.

The specialists established that the level of interleukin-6, a marker of coronary heart disease, is much lower in women who sleep 8 hours a day, compared with those who sleep 7 hours a day. The second marker, a highly sensitive C-reactive protein, predicts diseases of the cardiovascular system. His level rises sharply in women who sleep 5 or less hours per day.

More than 4,300 people aged between 35 and 55 took part in the study, 73% of whom were men. The duration of sleep was determined using questionnaires, and the state of health was checked by general examination.

It turned out that the data once again prove the scientists' belief that the relationship between the duration of sleep and cardiovascular diseases is nonlinear, explains the author of the study, a professor at the University of Warwick, Michelle Milleer. Moreover, the researchers confirm the view that the relationship between short sleep and cardiovascular diseases is strikingly different in women than in men. To make sure of cause-effect relationships, further research on this topic is needed, say the researchers.
