Daily intake of aspirin can save from the development of colon cancer, says a group of scientists from the University of Newcastle, so people at risk for this disease, you need to prescribe aspirin.

The study, published in the journal Lancet, showed that taking two aspirin tablets a day for two years almost two-thirds (63%) reduced the risk of developing colon cancer in patients who were at risk for this disease.

According to the head of the study, a professor at the University of Newcastle John Bern, this "extremely powerful" proof of the effectiveness of the drug.

Other experts note that recent results of British scientists confirm earlier that aspirin can be used.

The study was conducted with the participation of 861 patients suffering from Lynch syndrome, a genetic disease caused by a mutation of one of the genes, which is highly likely to result in colon cancer, often at a young age.

While in the control group, 34 people became ill with cancer, among the patients taking 600 mg of aspirin every day, malignant tumors only developed in 19 people - this is 44% less.

If we only consider patients who took aspirin for at least two years, the difference in the number of cases of cancer reaches 63%.

In addition, the incidence of other cancers, also associated with Lynch syndrome, was also halved compared to the control group.

In Britain there are about 30 thousand people with Lynch syndrome. According to John Berne, if all these people start taking aspirin, they will have 10,000 fewer cancer cases in the next 30 years, and in addition, up to 1,000 lives will be saved.

Of course, you need to take into account and side effects, but the professor is confident that the risk is justified.

"If we manage to prevent 10 thousand cases of cancer at the cost of 1000 ulcer diseases and hundreds of strokes, most people will find that this is a profitable exchange," he says..

"People whose families have a clear history of [hereditary] colon cancer should seriously consider including a small dose of aspirin in their daily diet, especially those who have a genetic predisposition," the professor believes..
