Kyiv Oblast is a region in northern Ukraine surrounding Kyiv, which is not part of it: the capital is a city with special status. It was created in 1932. In February and March 2022 the north of the region was occupied, and Bucha, Irpin, Borodianka and Hostomel became symbols of Russian war crimes. The Chornobyl exclusion zone lies in the north.
