Kherson is the centre of Kherson Oblast on the right bank of the Dnipro, with about 280,000 people before the war. Founded in 1778 as a fortress and shipyard, it was occupied from 2 March to 11 November 2022, the only regional centre captured in 2022, and was liberated by Ukrainian forces. It is shelled daily from the left bank of the Dnipro.
