Kaniv is a town in Cherkasy Oblast on the right bank of the Dnipro, with about 23,000 people. Known since 1078, it is where Taras Shevchenko is buried on Chernecha (Taras) Hill, one of Ukraine's main national memorials, and has the Kaniv hydroelectric station.
