Cherkasy is the centre of Cherkasy Oblast on the Kremenchuk reservoir of the Dnipro, with about 270,000 people. Known since the 14th century, it was a Cossack regimental town. It has chemical industry and a long embankment, and nearby Kaniv holds the grave of Taras Shevchenko.
