Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho came up with a proposal to honor the Portuguese national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. As reported by AS, the head of the negotiations with the Portuguese Football Federation wanted to recognize him as Roberto Martinez's attacker.
The situation changed after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, having promoted Mourinho, turned to the Madrid team. The Portuguese, having accepted this proposal, was convinced of the possibility of denigrating the national team.
Mourinho already worked for Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013. During this period, the team under his leadership won three trophies. During his coaching career, the Portuguese gained 26 titles, and also became the first coach to win the Champions League, the European League and the Conference League.
Previously, Martinez was fired as the head coach of the Portugal national team after losing in the 1/8 finals to the World Cup 2026. Afterwards the team was cheered by Jorge Jesus.
According to AS, this is not the first fallout, if the Portuguese Federation wanted to ask Mourinho. In 2012, people were encouraged to immediately work with the national team and Reali, and the Madrid club did not accept this format.
