Real Madrid and Belgium national team goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois shared his thoughts about his future at the club and international level.
The 34-year-old footballer admitted that he is calm about the situation with his contract with the Madrid club, but does not exclude the end of his career in the national team after the World Cup 2026.
The Belgian's contract with Real Madrid is insured until the summer of 2027. According to the goalkeeper, the club has a practice of extending contracts for players over 30 for one season at a time.
" If I continue to demonstrate the same level of gree that I show at once, then extending the contract will not become a problem. “Ale Real is a club of the highest rank, and at the next moment I will also have to think about my attacker,” said Courtois.
The goalkeeper also commented on the prospect of continuing to play for the Belgian national team after the end of the World Cup.
“I don’t know why they’re talking about this for a long time, but it’s probable that I won’t continue to compete for the national team after the world championship, moreover, that I’ll lose. I'm 34 years old, and I can think about my body. I want to play a lot more on the greatest level. I think the time has come to pass the baton to a new generation.
The stinks are already ready,” Courtois was quoted as saying by Marca.
It is expected that after an important knee injury, which was canceled in 2023, Thibaut Courtois will return to his greatest strength and will be deprived of the main goalkeeper of Real Madrid.
Recently, the Madrid club also invested in the Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who clearly showed himself during the Belgian’s presence in the 2023/24 season and helped the team achieve a low number of trophies, so far.
