Head coach Paulo Fonseca commented on the crushing defeat of Lyon against Lens (0:4) in the final round of League 1, as a result of which the team lost the chance to directly reach the main stage of the Champions League.
To achieve third place, it was enough for the Lyon team to draw, but a recent match pushed the team to fourth position. After the final whistle, the Portuguese coach learned that the team had failed the end of the season, but then positively assessed the campaign.
“We didn’t finish the season the way we wanted. The patients deserved a different result, and the atmosphere throughout this season was incredible. Teams are marrying without warning, because in such stressful situations it becomes difficult. After conceding several goals against such a rival as Lance, it is even more important to react,” Fonseca said.
Despite the painful defeat, the coach said that the fourth place was a good result, looking at the team’s problems at the start of the season:.
" We quickly lost the championship, had a lot of injuries and at the same time played in three tournaments.
I am more than happy with what the graves have achieved. Now we will have a chance to compete for promotion to the Champions League,” added the Portuguese.
Varto notes that Roman Yaremchuk played for Lyon on loan for the other half of the season. The Ukrainian striker played 14 matches, scoring five goals and providing one assist.
As soon as Yaremchuk's future at the French club is lost. The rights to the forward belong to Olympiakos, with whom he has a contract until the summer of 2028.
