Schalke's defender Matija Nastasic was forced to leave the field ahead of schedule in a match against Hamburg due to injury.
The survey revealed that the 25-year-old Serb has a rupture of the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, so he no longer helps the "cobalt" in this season.
To recover, Nastasic will need eight to 12 weeks, so his participation in the upcoming World Championship, which starts in nine weeks, is in doubt.
In the current season, Nastasic held 27 games for Schalke in all tournaments, in which he received five yellow and one red card.
