Goalkeeper Juventus Gianluigi Buffon was named footballer of the year in Italy.

A veteran of Italian football was awarded an honorable prize at yesterday's Gran Gala del Calcio ceremony, held in Milan.

"If I'm the best player in Italy, then I understand why we lost to the Swedes and did not go to the World Cup," Buffon joked, receiving the award.

Last season, Buffon helped Juventus to win the Italian championship, as well as reach the Champions League final.
