The former president of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, nicknamed "the poorest president in the world" for a modest way of life, said he does not want to receive a Senator's pension.

Muxika has worked in the Uruguayan Senate since 2015. He moved to this position after his presidential term expired. Last Tuesday he left the post of senator.

The former president could have stayed in the senatorial chair until 2020, but did not, writing in a letter requesting retirement that he was "tired after a long journey".

"Despite this, while my mind is still working, I can not give up solidarity and ideological struggle," the former president said in a letter to the head of the Senate Lucia Topolansky, Mujiko's wife, who is also the vice-president of the country.

Muhica 83 years old. About 14 years he spent in military prisons, reports BBC News.
