“Yevgeny Stankovich belongs to the galaxy of the most famous Ukrainian composers of the world level, who this year will celebrate his 80th birthday. On the long path of writing the opera, many iconic figures of Ukrainian culture joined this idea, in particular Stefan Turchak, Yuriy Ilyenko. At first, the premiere was planned for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Gogol at the National Opera of Ukraine (2007. ), but the author continued to work on the score for a long time. Already at the initiative of the Lviv National Opera, the premiere of this opera will take place in Lviv in November 2022, says ZN. UA artistic director of the Lviv National Opera, People's Artist of Ukraine Vasily Vovkun.

The libretto was created by E himself. Stankovich based on the story of the same name N. Gogol, which reveals the events of the Cossack era.

In the Lviv Opera they say that one of the best interpreters of Stankovich's work, People's Artist of Ukraine, artistic director and chief conductor of the National Honored Academic Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine Volodymyr Sirenko.

The well-known German director Andreas Weirich and stage designer Anna Schetl are involved in the international production team, cooperating primarily with the Bavarian State Opera.

“Such a creative combination of artists in an international production team will provide a way out of the purely traditional interpretation of the plot and characters and will contribute to the interpenetration of different creative worldviews, a harmonious combination of Ukrainian tradition and European current innovations,” says Vasily Vovkun.

According to the artistic director of the Lviv Opera, “it is in such dramatic military times as now that Ukrainian culture and its best representatives (of the level of Yevgeny Stankovich) unite and temper the Ukrainian nation in a period of dramatic historical trials”.
