The National Nuclear Energy Generation Company Energoatom signed a contract with the American Westinghouse Electric on the supply of nuclear fuel until 2025.

This was reported in the company Westinghouse, Ukrainian News.

Thus, the new contract provides for the supply of nuclear fuel to supply 7 out of 15 Ukrainian nuclear power units during 2021-2025, which means the expansion and continuation of the current contract for six power units, which expires in 2020.

Under the terms of the new contract, Westinghouse will receive some components of the fuel from the Ukrainian manufacturer.

Fuel production and assembly will be carried out at Westinghouse in Vasteras, Sweden, where there are dedicated production lines exclusively for the production of fuel for VVER-1000 reactors, and delivery under the contract will begin in early 2021, immediately after the completion of the current contract.

In November 2017, the vice-president of Energoatom, Alexander Shavlak, expressed the hope that "from 2020 on, we will not depend on the RF" in the issue of nuclear fuel supplies.

At the same time, Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Igor Nasalik claimed that Ukraine plans in 2018 to reduce the share of nuclear fuel purchases in Russia and increase purchases from Westinghouse from 40% to 55%.

Earlier, Westinghouse said that it was preparing to increase the supply of its own nuclear fuel to Ukrainian nuclear power plants and to increase its share in the nuclear fuel market of Ukraine.

In addition, Energoatom reported that he had found another substitute for Russian nuclear fuel.

It was also reported that China is ready to participate in the construction of facilities for the production of nuclear fuel in Ukraine.

The company Westinghouse has been operating in Ukraine since 1992, contributing to the diversification of supplies to the Ukrainian market of nuclear fuel. In the mid-1990s, Westinghouse began operating in the country to modernize and improve the safety of nuclear power plants.

In the framework of diversification of nuclear fuel sources for Ukrainian nuclear power plants and reduction of dependence on one supplier, the Russian TVEL company, Energoatom signed an agreement with Westinghouse in April 2014, which produces fuel at its plant in Sweden.
