A group of hackers associated with the Russian government created a network of fake sites for hacking resources, including those related to the US Senate, Microsoft said.. This time among the targets of cyberattacks were conservative organizations - the Hudson Institute and the International Republican Institute. The attack was fixed on the eve of the midterm elections to the US Congress. Sites resembled official sites that could be used to entice user passwords. In total, Microsoft removed six phishing sites, writes the Washington Post: senate. group, adfs-senate. services, adfs-senate. email and others.

With the help of viruses, hackers planned to replace the working mail interface of interested politicians with one of these sites, follows from a statement by Microsoft. Instead of a legitimate server, the password for the targets of this cyber attack would go to Moscow. At the same time, a complex network of "tunnels" would be used, the company explained.. In Microsoft, even called the hacker group, which, in its opinion, is behind the cyberattack is APT 28, or "target cyberattack number 28", also known as Fancy Bear, Sofacy and Pawn Storm.
