The National People's Congress of China adopted amendments to the Constitution that abolish the limitation of presidential terms. As the BBC reports, out of 2,644 participants in the congress only two voted against, three more - abstained.

Thus, Xi Jinping, whose term of office was due to end in 2023, can now remain in power for an unlimited amount of time.

Let us recall that earlier the period of the Chinese president's rule in power was limited to two five-year terms.

The limit that was removed was designed to prevent the emergence of an "eternal" leader like Mao Zedong, placing emphasis on collective leadership, rather than on individual rule and the cult of personality.

Xi Jinping became chairman of the PRC in 2013. With his coming to power in the country, economic reforms and a tough anti-corruption campaign began, and the growth of nationalism and the reduction of civil liberties.
