General mobilization and martial law continue in Ukraine. Men liable for military service who receive summonses are subject to conscription. Some people liable for military service are eligible for reservation. He noted that religious organizations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) were not included in the List of critical ones for the functioning of the economy and ensuring the livelihoods of the population during a special period. Therefore, GESS does not reserve their priests during mobilization.
According to Voynalovich, according to the criteria by which a religious organization is determined to be critical, it must have a legally valid charter, in particular, in the part where its full official name is stated.
The Deputy Chairman of the GESS noted that in 2018 the law “On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations” came into force. According to the document, religious organizations whose leadership center is located in a state that is recognized by law as having carried out military aggression against Ukraine and/or temporarily occupied part of the territory of Ukraine were required to change their name and make these changes to the charter.
According to Voynalovich, if such changes are not made within four months (for religious communities - nine) after the law came into force, then the part of the charter where the full official name of the religious organization is indicated loses force.
He emphasized that because of this, religious organizations of the UOC do not meet the criteria for inclusion in the list of critically important.
“Therefore, the GESS does not reserve their priests from conscription for military service upon mobilization,” the message says.
