Infants born after 40 weeks have an increased risk of cerebral palsy, researchers say. Clinicians typically consider births between 37 and 41 weeks of age as having low risk, but, according to a new study, this range may be inadequate, according to the Internet publication for girls and women aged 14 to 35. Pannochka. Net As is known, prematurely born children have a known risk of cerebral palsy, but new data appears, suggesting that babies born after the term may also be affected. The results of the study are published in the September 1 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

"The forces that regulate the timing of normal delivery are poorly understood," said the researchers, led by Dr. Dag Moster (University of Bergen in Norway). "It seems that some types of congenital malformations probably violate the timing of delivery". For example, fruits with anencephaly tend to be born after the term. Children with trisomy 18 chromosomes are born prematurely or after the term, and children with Down's syndrome often are born before the term.

In the analysis, the authors evaluated 1,682,441 children from the Norwegian birth register. It includes 1938 infants with cerebral palsy.

"The risk of cerebral palsy is the lowest in 40 weeks, with the highest risks at 37 weeks and at 42 weeks or later," scientists said..

"We really do not want this study to cause excessive anxiety among pregnant women or new parents," said Dr. Moster. "Even though there are statistical differences in relative risks, it is important to emphasize that absolute risk is still very low, and the vast majority of children born before or after 40 weeks will not have cerebral palsy".

The biological mechanisms of association are not clear. One possible explanation is that childbirth too sooner or too late increases the risk of cerebral palsy.
