Portal runews24. Ru reports that US Senator John McCain criticized US President Donald Tramp for stopping support for anti-government opposition in Syria, as it could play into Russia's hands.

As it became known earlier, the head of the White House, Donald Trump, decided to stop the CIA program on armament, as well as the military training of the opposition in Syria, which opposes the president of the Syrian Arab Republic, Bashar Assad.

However, the administration of the US President has not officially confirmed the termination of this program.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation notes that Moscow welcomes any steps to ease tensions in Syria.

McCain noted that reports that the administration allegedly stops the program of helping the opposition in the UAR are irresponsible and short-sighted, as it plays into the hands of Russia and Assad.

The senator added that the key direction of the US strategy in this country should be the removal of Assad from power.
