China is rapidly increasing its economic influence over Mongolia, sharply increasing coal purchases and funding new logistics routes. China's share of Ulaanbaatar's exports has already exceeded 90%, while the Russian presence has almost disappeared, signaling a shift in power in Central Asia. This was reported by the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine. Thus, Mongolia plans to increase coal exports to China by almost 20% this year. The government forecasts sales will reach 100 million tons, which will strengthen the resources sector, which already forms about 12% of the country's GDP.. The government also declares proven oil reserves at 33.4 billion tons, but it is coal that remains the most liquid item of Mongolian exports. To support volume growth, both countries are promoting infrastructure projects: China and Mongolia have agreed on the construction of a new railway line between Gashuun-Sukhait and Ganchi-Modu. Beijing is simultaneously building an approach to the Ganchi-Modu transition for its part. These projects could push Mongolian coal exports to 165 million tons per year, which is especially important for China as the world's largest steel producer. The department noted that Beijing’s dominance in Mongolian foreign trade is increasing rapidly. More than 90% of Mongolian exports now go to the Chinese market, up from 64% in 2022. For comparison, second largest Switzerland receives only 5.6% of Mongolian supplies. In turn, Russia, until recently one of the key neighbor-partners, has actually lost its role. Its share in Ulaanbaatar’s exports decreased to 0.5%, which reflects a change in the geo-economic balance in the region and the gradual displacement of Moscow from the Mongolian market.

“The growth of Mongolia’s trade dependence on China indicates a deep transformation of economic priorities and reformatting of the power field in Central Asia, where Russian influence continues to weaken against the backdrop of Beijing’s active expansion,” the NWRU summarized. Let us recall that the decline in Russian-Chinese trade, which began in 2025 for the first time in three years of war in Ukraine, continues to accelerate.
