Due to the military invasion of the Russian Federation, many Ukrainians were forced to go abroad, in particular to Poland. The Polish Social Security Administration (ZUS) found that some of the refugees left Poland, but continued to receive assistance. These people will have to return payments, according to Channel 24..

Who should return the aid.

Approximately 2 million zloty wrongfully paid to Ukrainian refugees. Since they left Poland, they should not receive support. Already returned 35.3 thousand PLN.

ZUS amounts do not apply to family benefits and social benefits. Municipalities run them. But payments that were paid illegally can be much more.. ZUS gives two years for a refund.

So, in Poland, on January 28, 2023, amendments to the law on assistance to citizens of Ukraine came into force.. In accordance with it, the payment of assistance to families of citizens of Ukraine is suspended if the recipient of the allowance or the child for whom assistance is assigned leaves Poland.

Thanks to the amendment, ZUS also gained access to the register of the Border Guard Service, and with it, to information on the dates of entry and exit of Ukrainian citizens from Poland.. During the month of the new provision of the Aid Law, ZUS suspended the payment of benefits to about 3,200 citizens of Ukraine.

If these persons return to Poland within 30 days from the date of departure, they will not lose the legality of their stay in the country and the payment of assistance will be resumed.

But the system for resuming payments may still fail, since border guards may not register the return in a special register.. Therefore, when returning, you need to tell the border guards that “I am returning to Poland in connection with the flight from the war”, otherwise you may lose access to Polish medical care and benefits.
