Shushkevich urged Lukashenka to resign

Former Chairman of the Supreme Council of Belarus Stanislav Shushkevich called on the incumbent head of state Alexander Lukashenko to resign. He stated this in an interview with the radio station "

According to Shushkevich, Lukashenka has been holding the presidency illegally for several years..

He also pointed out the problems in the country's economy and admitted that he was surprised by the number of protesters..

“We have no economic policy, our cadres decide everything, and cadres are playing. We have a huge debt, - the politician stressed. “And the people overcame fear, I have never seen such an avalanche of people, and I could not have thought that so many protesters would take to the streets”.

Shushkevich served as chairman of the Supreme Council of Belarus from 1991 to 1994. He is a longtime oppositionist to Lukashenka's policies.
