In the Palestinian Authority, there is the post of Minister for Palestinian Prisoners in Israeli prisons. Ramallah pays benefits to those serving time terrorists and their families, released to the rebels, as well as relatives of the dead terrorists.
For these needs, about 300 million dollars are allocated each year. This is approximately 6-7% of the total budget of the autonomy, that is, an impressive amount. Money is laid in various tricky budget points and protected by law. The overwhelming majority of funds go to autonomy in the framework of international assistance.
For many years, the Israeli leadership has been telling world leaders that it is a disastrous practice that serves as an obstacle to peace and an actual incentive for terrorists to kill Israelis.
However, for the first time this topic will become one of the central issues - at the upcoming meeting of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas with US President Donald Trump, Channel 9 reports with reference to Walla. This will be the first meeting of the two leaders, it will be held at the White House in early May.
Anonymous sources in the government note that the US President's special envoy, Jason Greenblatt, at a meeting with Abbas in March directly told the Palestinian leader - it's time to put an end to this. This is the Israeli condition for the resumption of negotiations.
In parallel, US congressmen and Israeli parliamentarians are preparing similar legislative initiatives that reinforce the diplomatic push of the White House.
In late February, the Senate began developing the so-called "Taylor Force act," in honor of an American army officer who died in a terrorist attack in Jaffa in March last year.
A group of pro-Israel Republican senators, led by Lindsey Graham, is promoting a bill under which one of the conditions for granting financial assistance to the Palestinian autonomy will be the abandonment of the practice of financing terrorists and their loved ones, publicly condemning terror, and measures aimed at reducing violence.
The Israeli version of the bill was presented in the Knesset in March. He proposes every month to deduct the amounts that the Palestinian Autonomy transfers to militants and their families from the taxes collected for the Palestinians.
However, attempts by the White House to reanimate the peace process may complicate the advancement of both bills.
