History of the holiday.

Previously, in Ukraine, Programmer's Day was celebrated on September 13 or September 12 in a leap year, falling on the 256th day of the year - a symbolic number associated with the number of values in an eight-bit byte. It is the largest possible value for systems with 8-bit encoding, because 256 = 2? Here the two symbolizes the binary number system, and the eight symbolizes the number of bits in a byte. This is the largest number, which is even less than the number of days in the calendar year.

Since the September date of the holiday was of Russian origin, since 2022 the Ukrainian IT community has abandoned its celebration, preferring International Programmer Day on January 7.

On December 24, 2025, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky signed a decree establishing Programmer Day in Ukraine.

“Taking into account the significant contribution of information technology specialists to the development of the digital economy and digital security of the state, which plays an important role in strengthening the national security and defense capability of Ukraine, as well as the development of the IT industry: establish a professional holiday in Ukraine - Programmer’s Day, which is celebrated on January 7,” the document says.
