European Union ambassadors have agreed on a series of rules that are designed to make it easier to extend the freeze on Russian assets.. The new procedure will not require unanimity of all EU members on this issue, which will circumvent Hungarian resistance. Journalist Rikard Jozwiak reported this on Thursday, December 11, on the social network X. “Ambassadors have just agreed on a rule change that will make it easier to store frozen Russian assets in the bloc.. Unanimity to extend the freeze is no longer the only option. A big step towards a potential reparation loan for Ukraine,” wrote Jozwiak. Meanwhile, Suspilne, citing the press service of the Danish EU Presidency, adds that we are talking about Article 122 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which is a legal framework that the bloc can use in exceptional situations. This gives European institutions special powers to respond to crises. In particular, we are talking about economic or energy challenges. It is also noted that work on the issue of financing Ukraine in 2026-2027 will continue in the coming days.

Previously, the media wrote that the European Commission had found a legal way that allows frozen Russian assets to remain in Europe indefinitely - even without the unanimous support of EU countries. The new scheme is complex and far from ideal, but it could work as Ukraine faces a funding shortfall in the first half of next year. Later, the ECB supported the EU’s idea of \u200b\u200ban indefinite freeze of Russian assets, noting that this procedure is the closest to the requirements of compliance with international law in this matter.
