The ocean covers the huge area of \u200b\u200bthe planet and is a house for an incredible number of living organisms, including one of the most dangerous predators on Earth - large white sharks. Representatives of this species reach enormous sizes, and the only natural predators for them are killer whales, which have recently been increasingly hunting for the liver of large white sharks, writes Live Science.

In a new study, a team from a non -profit organization for the study of Ocearch sharks noticed a giant male of a large white shark off the east coast. Researchers marked the male, giving him the name Contender (contender), and said that he is probably the largest male of a large white shark, ever caught and studied in the northwestern part of the Atlantic Ocean.

During the study, scientists marked the predatory giant on January 17, about 70 km east of the coastline on the border of Georgia and Florida, and released free. The authors of the study note that the length of Contender reaches 4.2 meters in length, and its weight is about 750 kilograms.

Ocearch researchers mark white sharks conducting the winter in the southeast of the United States. According to the chief veterinarian and senior veterinary researcher of the organization, Dr. Harley Newton, the giant male became only the third adult animals, whom they caught and took samples during the winter stay of the sharks.

It is known that males of a large white shark ripen at about 26 years old and reach a length of about 3.5 meters, so scientists were extremely glad that they managed to find a male 4.3 meters long.

Most of the records of the length of the sharks are approximate, and larger grades are often disputed. However, according to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, the District of Colombia, the length of mature males is from 3.4 to 4 meters. This indicates that Contender is about 23 centimeters longer than a typical large male of this species.

At the same time, females of large white sharks grow to about 6.1 meters in length - this is much larger than males, which makes Contender not the largest representative of their species. At the same time, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History, there are unconfirmed reports that large white sharks grew up to about 7 meters.

According to Newton, in their research, they and colleagues do not face adults so often, and therefore the detection of Contender is incredibly important. Note that the organization is trying to better understand the life of large white sharks in the North Atlantic to help inform environmental efforts to protect the species.

During the study, scientists used the intellectual label of position and temperature to monitor animals. The Spot label, which is fixed on the first spinal fin of the shark, sends a signal to the satellite every time the shark breaks the surface of the water, according to the World Wildlife Fund. With the help of this technology, scientists can track the location of the shark, and also record data on the depth and temperature of the ocean.

Previously, Focus wrote that a giant pregnant Big White Shark was accidentally killed by scientists.
