While pandemic locks forced people to be at home in isolation, the vegetation of the planet seemed to flourish. A new study of scientists, based on satellite records from 2001 to 2020, shows that 2020 has become the most green over the past two decades, writes Phys. Org.

Ground vegetation is vital for life on the whole planet: plants regulate carbon and water cycles, nourish organisms and help compensate for emissions of fossil fuel, but this is only part of the advantages. Monitoring of landscaping and variability trends can give information about the methods and strategies of ecosystem management to solve the climate warming problem.

According to the leading author of the new study, a researcher at the Land and Environmental School of the Nicholas at the University of Duke Yuylun Zhang, they and his colleagues found that constant growth in the northern and moderate regions in combination with a brief period of topical growth, probably, is likely.

The ground vegetation of the Earth in the process of photosynthesis absorbs a huge amount of carbon dioxide, and therefore is actually a natural solution to the climate crisis of the planet. In the course of a new study, scientists analyzed satellite data collected in the period from 2001 to 2020, for signs of landscaping, using several indicators, such as:.

There was a general tendency to more abundant vegetation with significant variability from year to year. However, scientists noted that 2020 became especially green, in comparison with other years. Scientists suggested that Lokdown can be responsible for the rampage of vegetation. For example, the Locks and restrictions on trips temporarily reduced daily activity and air pollution, which could allow plants to flourish with brighter sunlight in the absence of human intervention.

The authors of the study used machine learning and environmental modeling to study various factors and detect what allowed vegetation to prosper in 2020. Contrary to expectations, quarantine restrictions had a very limited effect on the global landscaping of the earth.

The team discovered that the record -high landscaping of 2020 was primarily associated with moderate and cold regions, which was facilitated by the growth of the level of CO2, climate warming and efforts on forestry.. The authors of the study note that the consequences of global climate warming were most noticeable in the cooler regions of the planet, for example, in boreal forests, where the warmest temperature extended the vegetation period.

According to the co -author of the study of Tonga Tsu, India and China were another factor, which turned into green foci due to planting trees, restoring land and agricultural management efforts.

The authors of the study also note that their results indicate that the Earth seems to have an amazing ability to adapt to environmental changes. However, scientists also warn that extreme climatic phenomena, such as water lack of water, forest fires and anthropogenic pressure can potentially slow down, and possibly also turn these achievements of the planet.

Previously, Focus wrote that the hottest year on Earth was named in history.
