Astronomers received an image with the highest resolution from the ever received, one thread in the cosmic web, which connects two galaxies at the formation stage. Although dark matter for us and it can only be detected with the help of its gravitational influence on ordinary matter, it is about 85% of all matter in the universe and plays a decisive role in the formation of a large -scale structure of space. The gravitational influence of dark matter holds the galaxy together and forms a cosmic web consisting of interconnected threads, dark matter, intergalactic gas and galaxies. At the intersection of the threads of the space web, the brightest galaxies arise.

One of the biggest problems that astronomers are faced with a space web is facing that intergalactic gas can mainly be detected by how it absorbs light from more distant objects. But the results of such studies do not help to understand the distribution of gas in the space web.

The authors of the study used the latest MUSE spectrograph, installed on the terrestrial telescope VLT and received the best image of the thread of a space web 3 million light years to date, which connects two galaxies in the formation stage. In each of these galaxies there is a central ultra -massive black hole.

Scientists were able to demonstrate a new way to study the threads of the space web, which helps to learn more about the formation of galaxies and the evolution of the universe. According to scientists, for the first time they managed to find the border between galactic gas and gas in the thread of the cosmic web using direct measurements.

Before their study of deep space, astronomers created a modeling of radiation of the threads of the cosmic web based on the current model of the evolution of the universe. After receiving new data, scientists compared them with the results of modeling and it turned out that they are very similar.

Now scientists are collecting additional data to detect more such structures, and this should help get a complete representation of the distribution of gas in the space web.

The universe consists of many large -scale structures, which together unite huge number of galaxies, and all of them are also part of the cosmic web. As Focus already wrote, scientists managed to find a new large -scale structure in the universe closest to us, and its length is 1.3 billion light years.
