The United Arab Emirates (UAE) unveiled the world's first large-scale, 24/7 gigascale renewable energy facility, combining solar power with advanced batteries.

This innovative project is reported by the international publication SolarQuarter.

The new facility combines 5.2 GW of solar capacity with 19 GW of battery storage hours to generate 1 GW of uninterrupted renewable energy. Developed in collaboration with Emirates Water and Electricity Company, the facility aims to address the intermittency of renewable energy sources by providing a continuous supply of clean energy day and night..

For decades, the biggest obstacle to renewable energy has been intermittency—an uninterrupted supply of clean energy day and night.. This innovative project solves this problem.

The facility is a key component of the UAE's wider vision to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It sets a new global standard for sustainable energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and marks significant progress in the country's pursuit of a sustainable energy future, the UAE noted.

Let us remind you that the Cabinet of Ministers unveiled the National Action Plan for Renewable Energy for the period until 2030.

The Plan notes that Russia’s war in Ukraine led to the loss of about 25% of installed renewable energy capacity.

Wind generation was especially affected - 75% or about 1.25 GW, of which are located in the occupied territories of the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions (taking into account the capacities occupied until 2022 - 1.4 GW). Also, about 14% of solar power plants are under occupation - more than 0.6 GW.

However, the share of renewable energy remains significant. Taking into account large hydroelectric power plants, the share of renewable energy sources reached 20.3% (more than in the pre-war period).
