According to the analyst company IHS Markit, world shipments of displays for laptops in 2017 will grow by 5% and reach 177 million units. At the same time, shipments of laptops themselves are expected to be approximately at the same level as in 2016.
Fearing a slowdown in supplies due to an overabundance in the market (in 2018 experts predict a decrease in shipments to 168.6 million units), panel manufacturers are focusing on more high-end and energy-efficient displays, manufactured using IPS (in-plane switching) technologies, LTPS (low-temperature polycrystalline Si) and Oxide TFT.
It is expected that in 2017 IPS-panels providing a wide viewing angle and improved color reproduction, will occupy 37% of the total shipments of displays for laptops, and in 2018 - 42%. For comparison, last year the share of IPS-screens was at the level of 27%.
The largest buyer of IPS-panels for laptops will be Lenovo, which will purchase more than 12 million units of this product. The use of this type of screen in their laptops will expand and the other two leading PC brands - HP and Dell, believe in IHS.
Also, experts predict the growth in the use of displays that consume less energy, including panels such as LTPS and Oxide TFT. It is expected that the share of laptops with such screens will increase from 3% in 2016 to 10% in 2017, and in 2018 will reach 13%.
Given the trend towards the distribution of high-quality screens, IHS Markit expects that the average selling price (ASP) of laptop panels will rise: this year to 46.68 dollars, and next - up to 47.96 dollars.
