One slice of white bread may contain more salt than french fries Studies show that one slice of white bread may contain more salt than a serving of fast food fries.

Three quarters have been found to contain as much salt per slice as a package of pre-made salty chips - 0.34g.

Two slices of soft white bread contains 1.2 g - one-fifth of the recommended daily allowance for an adult and the same amount as a hamburger.

Five foods contained more than 0.9g of salt per serving - usually two slices of loaf - more than two small servings of McDonald's fries.

Cutting back on bread may reduce high blood pressure and consequent heart attacks and strokes, doctors say.

" Reducing sodium intake may also prevent many deaths.. Eating salty foods can lead to a loss of calcium, some of which can be extracted from the bone, lead to kidney disease, kidney stones, osteoporosis, stomach cancer,"

The ideal menu for a healthy heart WHO recommends that adults consume no more than 6 g of salt per day - about a teaspoon.
