After brushing teeth, orange juice becomes tasteless. Why?

These things do not work well together. After brushing your teeth, orange juice seems to lose its taste - it becomes unsweetened and even slightly bitter.

Specialists from the Harvard School of Public Health believe that it's all about the sodium lauryl sulphate contained in the toothpaste - the ingredient that causes the paste to form a foam. Sodium lauryl sulfate is used in the manufacture of most detergents and shampoos, but they usually do not enter our mouths, but toothpaste - yes. This is reported by med. vesti. en.

In the mouth, we have taste buds - sensitive receptors that perceive the taste of substances. We know five flavors: sweet, salty, sour, bitter and umami (the bright representatives of the minds are soy sauce and fermented cheeses). The act of tasting is a bit like a chemical quest. The food releases molecules that bind to the corresponding receptors. For example, when the bitter molecules of a cucumber ass bind to the bitter receptor, we realize that we have just eaten something bitter.

But sodium lauryl sulfate interferes with the process of "finding the vapor": simultaneously it suppresses the sweet receptors and destroys our phospholipids - compounds that reduce the activity of the bitter receptors. After SLS, our taste buds suddenly feel much more bitterness than sweets.

Oranges themselves are slightly bitter because of citric acid, but this taste is usually masked in juice with additional sugar. However, the insidious component of the toothpaste "spoils the disguise" and the bitter notes come to the fore, and the sweet ones become almost imperceptible. That's the whole riddle of the changed taste of juice. However, sodium lauryl sulfate quickly, within a few minutes, dissolves with saliva, and if we eat, for example a piece of bread, then even faster. And orange juice will again be a delicious morning drink.
