For many years, scientists have differently looked at the theory that taking antidepressants during pregnancy increases the risk of mental disorders in children, including autism, according to an online edition for girls and women aged 14 to 35. Pannochka. net Massachusetts researchers have now proved that widespread antidepressants are not associated with autism based on a large analysis, but there is little likelihood that they can cause attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.

The results question the previous work, the authors of which argued that the impact of antidepressants in utero increases the risk of autism in children.

New data suggest that the lack of treatment for severe depression in a mother puts the child's physical and mental health at risk.

"We know that untreated depression can pose a serious threat to both the mother and the baby, so it is very important to take antidepressants prescribed by the doctor," said study lead author Dr. Roy Perlis, a researcher at the Department of Mental Health of the Massachusetts General Hospital hospitals in Boston (USA).

In a recent study, Dr. Perlis and his colleagues reviewed the medical records of thousands of children with autism and ADHD, as well as several thousand children without psychiatric problems. In total, 1400 cases were included in the analysis, when mothers took antidepressants, and children were born with autism. Also, more than 4,000 cases were included when mothers took antidepressants without any consequences for the child.

Initial results suggest that taking antidepressants during pregnancy does increase the risk of diseases of the spectrum of autism and ADHD. But after scientists added to the analysis the severity of depression, the connection between antidepressants and autism became insignificant.

Dr. Deepan Singh, a well-known expert in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry, a member of the Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, believes that the most important thing is to treat pregnant women with depression, especially with severe.

Dr. Singh said: "Up to 20% of pregnant women suffer from depression, which is associated with the risk of premature birth, low birth weight, pre-eclampsia, postpartum depression and suicide.

If you leave this disease without attention, women with high probability of depression will become aggravated, addictions and dangerous types of behavior may develop ".

A new study, according to the psychiatrist, gives hope that in pregnant women who are struggling with depression, unwarranted fears of antidepressants and autism. Although the final decision should be taken by the patient together with her doctor, Dr. Singh believes that the treatment of depression in pregnant women is much safer than giving up therapy.
