According to recent surveys, in the United States, 18% of adults with full employment work more than 60 hours per week.

Although these extra hours of work bring prosperity to the workaholic house, it is very harmful to the health of the heart.

A new study suggests that such workers significantly increase the risk of heart attack.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. GCC kill about 600,000 people every year. Coronary artery disease, including heart attack, accounts for 380 000 deaths. Coronary artery disease (CHD) is characterized by a narrowing of the lumen of the arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle.

A research team from the Medical Research Center and the College of Medicine of the Seoul National University (Republic of Korea), led by Dr. Yun-Chul Hong, reviewed earlier scientific work in this field. All of them confirmed that additional hours of work are associated with such diseases as hypertension, diabetes, sleep disorders, as well as with psychoemotional problems.

"Long working hours not only affect physical health, but also affect the way of life - eating habits, prolonged sitting, smoking, drinking alcohol and other unhealthy ways to" relieve stress ". It is very likely that additional working hours in this way affect the risk of cardiovascular disease.

61-70 working hours per week is an extra 42% for CHD risk.

In a study whose results were presented in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, Dr. Hong and his colleagues tried to determine the exact impact of additional working hours on the risk of coronary heart disease in workers.

Scientists conducted an analysis that included 8,350 participants aged 19 years and over who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey IV (2007-2009).

A few facts about coronary artery disease:.

• The risk of CHD increases from 45 years in men and from 55 years in women.

• One of the leading manifestations of CHD - angina (chest pain due to insufficient blood supply to the myocardium).

• Many people with CHD can reduce their risk in simple ways: change their lifestyle, start exercising, stop smoking.

Participants in the Korean study were asked about the length of their working day, as well as lifestyle factors, including diet, exercise, smoking, drinking. All of them underwent medical examination, they measured blood pressure, total cholesterol and lipid profile, determined glucose tolerance.

The 10-year risk of coronary artery disease in subjects was assessed using the Framingham risk model, a scoring system that uses a large set of baseline data to assess the patient's likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease over a period of time.

Scientists have calculated that the longer a person works, the more likely CHD will develop in the next 10 years. People who work 61-70 hours a week have cardiovascular risk at 42% higher than those who do not work more than 40 hours per week. Well, if a participant works more than 80 hours a week, the risk of coronary artery disease increases by 94%.

If we talk about the reasons, it turned out that people with the maximum number of working hours accumulated the most risk factors for heart disease.

They are more likely to suffer from hypertension, often have elevated cholesterol (possibly due to malnutrition), are more likely to smoke.

"These results confirm that additional working hours have a negative impact on the cardiovascular system," say scientists.

But they were surprised that participants who worked less than 30 hours a week had higher blood pressure and a worse lipid profile compared to those who worked 31-40 hours a week. Accordingly, they had a higher cardiac risk.
