Domestic cats are the cause of eczema in children with certain genetic abnormalities, scientists from the University of Copenhagen.

According to Dr. Hans Bisgaard, this is another example of how genetic mechanisms interact with environmental factors. A person can have genes that are responsible for the development of many diseases, but never suffer from any of them. However, this is possible in the absence of a certain external influence on the patient, said a specialist from the Danish pediatric center, according to an online edition for girls and women from 14 to 35 years old Pannochka. Net Scientists conducted an experiment in which it was found out that in children with mutations in the gene of fillagrin - one of the skin proteins - during the first year of life eczema developed twice as often as in children of the control group. If the family of children with a mutation of the gene in the house lived a cat, the risk of developing eczema was even higher.

Eczema or atopic dermatitis is manifested in the first year of life in 65% of patients with this pathology, experts from the National Institute of Arthritis, Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and skin of the USA.

Symptoms of the disease are present in more than 20% of newborns and preschool children.

Dr. Bisgaard explained that the study did not establish how the cats affect the development of eczema. However, it became apparent that eczema is not an allergic reaction to the feline family. According to the expert, it is too early to recommend that parents throw out cats from their homes, since this discovery needs further confirmation.
