Lithium, used for many years to treat depression and manic syndrome, can turn the notion of Alzheimer's disease, according to the latest research of Dr. Orest Forlenz, writes The Telegraph.

Lithium was tested at 41 volunteers aged more than 60 years with a mild cognitive disorder, usually leading to Alzheimer's disease. It turned out that the degree of degradation was lower in people who daily took 150 milligrams of lithium, compared with those who took placebo.

Also, the levels of the biomarker associated with this disease, called "phospho-tau concentration," grew more slowly among those taking lithium.

Experts believe that this element interferes with the work of mechanisms leading to the formation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary ligaments responsible for the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Professor Alan Young, a psychiatrist at King's College in London, is confident that this discovery will play a big role in medicine, but so far, further testing is required.
