The identification of patients with heart failure became easier thanks to a new revolutionary technology that was developed by German scientists. It allows you to diagnose an illness at an early stage without carrying out any invasive procedures, writes Science Daily.

The so-called "electronic nose" system was created by a team of researchers from the University Hospital of Jena. It includes three gas sensors, each of which has a special sensitivity to various types of odorant molecules (an additive that gives the gas a smell).

The sensors detect various odorous sweat molecules. A specially developed software allows you to divide these molecules, and accordingly patients, into groups, depending on the specific structure.

In 2010, researchers used an "electronic nose" to screen 250 patients, 126 of whom subsequently participated in a clinical trial. At the same time, the volunteers were divided into three groups: patients with heart failure, with decompensated heart failure and healthy people.

As a result, the device allowed to distinguish heart failure from decompensated with a sensitivity of 89% and specificity of 88%, as well as healthy people with a sensitivity of 89% and a specificity of 84%.
