The use of foods high in sugar worsens memory function, according to Canadian researchers from the University of Waterloo.

Scientists conducted an experiment on laboratory rats, in which 60% of the daily calories were fed on fructose. The rats bathed in a special pool where a platform was constructed to exit the water. A few days later, the exit site was removed and watched whether the rats could remember the location of the platform.

It turned out that fructose did not affect the ability of rodents to learn, but affected the work of spatial memory - animals could not remember the place where there used to be a platform to exit the water, experts explained.

Unlike glucose, fructose is processed almost exclusively only in the liver, resulting in an excessive amount of triglycerides - fats entering the bloodstream. Triglycerides interfere with insulin signals in the brain, which plays an important role in the survival of brain cells and plasticity (the ability of the brain to change based on the experience).

Specialists concluded that the use of excessive amounts of sugar, concentrated fruit juices, syrups and any other products on fructose is fraught with not only a memory impairment, but also the development of type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disorders.

To obtain the necessary amount of fructose for the body, it is enough to eat only one apple a day, the therapists say, but one should refrain from sweetened carbonated drinks and a lot of ordinary sugar in the diet.
